A school safety awareness program was conducted at BRC Edappal on 28 May 2025 with an inauguration by AEO Mr. Hyder Ali Master and training led by Mr. Binesh Master.
The session primarily focused on Disaster Management (DM) in the school context. It began with an overview of the existing Disaster Management group and stressed the importance of mock drills, safety audits (by the school safety committee), and the compulsory appointment of a Safety Nodal Officer in every school.
A detailed discussion was held on various types of disasters, citing the example of the Tanur boat tragedy as both a natural and human-induced disaster. The Disaster Management Act, 2005, consisting of 11 chapters, was discussed along with the concept of disasters as both “evil and star.”
Topics covered included:
Natural and Anthropogenic Disasters
Disaster Management Cycle
Disaster Management Policy 2009 and its institutional framework
Role of District Disaster Management Authority
Nodal Ministries for Disaster Management in India
Central and State Notified Disasters
Special attention was given to the disaster risk in Kerala, and the vulnerability profile of Malappuram district. Participants discussed warning systems and SOPs from the Orange Book of Disaster Management. The rain alert colour codes — green, yellow, orange, and red — were also explained.
The session concluded with a group activity and discussion on potential safety threats faced by schools and how to mitigate them effectively.
